Art lovers should come check out a mural by local artist, Mary Ann Fernandez, of the Weehawken Water Tower, portrayed as a stable oak tree with long deep roots in Weehawken. The butterflies surrounding the tree are in remembrance of my father who immigrated to Weehawken in 1967 to work in the garment industry and like so many immigrants worked on both sides of the Hudson River, often greeted by the sign stating “Welcome to Northern New Jersey, Embroidery Capital of the World Since 1872.” Since the 1880s, the Water Tower has been an icon in our neighborhood, a symbol of the hardworking ingenuity of this community. Once referred to as “the most important structure of its kind in the country,” it serves as inspiration for us as we hope to serve this community for years to come. Stop in for a cup of coffee and to say hi!
